"People hear Barbie and think, 'I know what that movie is going to be,'" Margot Robbie has said, "and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't...'"
The first teaser trailer for Gerwig's Barbie proved as much when, of all movies in the history of movies, it riffed on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Because, when you think of the Barbie doll, who doesn't instantly think of Stanley Kubrick's esoteric sci-fi masterpiece? A new trailer is similarly light on plot specifics but provides a better sense of what to expect from the pastel-hued motion picture, which stars Robbie as (a? the?) Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. "To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you're a Ken." Watch the trailer below.
Barbie is Gerwig's follow-up to 2019's Oscar-nominated Little Women and 2017's Oscar-nominated Lady Bird before that, directing from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. Alongside the trailer, the studio released character posters revealing who in the cast is a Barbie and who's just a Ken.
Barbie arrives in theaters on July 21.
